Routes into firms after your degree
Graduate schemes and training contracts
Many firms recruit trainee solicitors through graduate schemes, vacation schemes and training contracts, often a year or more ahead. Deadlines vary, so check each firm's own careers page.
Paralegal roles
Paralegal work is a common first job after a law degree. Firms hire graduate paralegals directly, and the Level 3 Paralegal and Level 5 Advanced Paralegal apprenticeships are funded for ages 16 to 24.
CILEX chartered legal executive
Qualify as a chartered legal executive lawyer while you work at a firm. It is a lawyer qualification in its own right, and some people later go on to qualify as solicitors.
Graduate solicitor apprenticeship
Since January 2026, government funding for this route covers apprentices aged 16 to 21, or 22 to 24 with an EHC plan or care-leaver status. A firm can still offer it to older graduates and pay for the training itself, but most graduates over 21 will find more openings through graduate schemes, paralegal roles and CILEX.

For law societies: book a talk or webinar
If you're on the committee of a law society at University College London, we can run a session for your members on routes into firms after a law degree: graduate schemes, paralegal roles, CILEX and the graduate solicitor apprenticeship. Sessions are free, can be online or in person, and follow your students' union's external speaker process.
