Career progression

From first apprenticeship to qualified solicitor

You don't have to know your final destination on day one. Here's every stage of the apprenticeship pathway and how each one moves you forward.

Stage 1 · 15–18 months

Legal Admin (Level 3)

Learn how a law firm actually works. Diaries, document management, client care, billing.

Stage 2 · 18–24 months

Paralegal Apprenticeship (Level 3)

Support fee earners on real client matters. Case preparation, research, drafting basics.

Stage 3 · 18 months

Advanced Paralegal (Level 4)

Own your caseload under supervision. Draft substantive documents, attend hearings.

Stage 4 · 3–4 years

CILEx Chartered Legal Executive (Level 6)

Become a specialist qualified lawyer in your chosen practice area.

Stage 5 · 5–6 years

Solicitor Apprenticeship (Level 7)

Qualify as a solicitor with the SQE. Same qualification as the university route.

You don't have to do them all

Many of our applicants join at Level 3 and stay there — a fully qualified paralegal is a great career. Others rise through every level. Both paths are valid.
